The reason Argentina legend, Diego Maradona, was paid £10,000 per game to watch his country’s 2018 World Cup games in Russia has been revealed. Daily Mail UK reports that FIFA was giving out the amount per match to have Maradona in attendance as part of President Gianni Infantino’s legends’ scheme. It added that the former UEFA general secretary wants at least one former superstar from each nation at the World Cup to provide an ambassadorial role in their country’s games. The concept is to mix the past and the present, hoping that plenty of exposure warrants their pay checks, while expenses are paid for travel and accommodation. However, Maradona will no longer be paid as an ambassador of world soccer governing body, FIFA.
