Assassins kill Kogi labour leader, 2 otherS

LOKOJA—The Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, in Kogi State, Abdulmumini Yakubu, and one Mallam Ibrahim Oar, who went to discuss community issues with him, were, Wednesday night, killed by gunmen in Okene, Kogi Central senatorial district.

The killing is also coming a day after one other person was killed by gunmen in Nagazi, Adavi Local Government Area of the state. While some persons alleged that the killing may be political, the Police, however, said they are still investigating his murder. A family source, who said the duo were murdered by five heavily-armed gunmen, when he was performing ablution to observe his prayers, stressed that the assassins alighted from a Toyota Sienna bus. The source further hinted that while people scampered for safety when they heard the sound of the gun, the gunmen waited and made sure that he was dead before they zoomed off. Until his death, Abdulmumini Yakubu was a staff of Kogi State Science Teachers’ Board, Lokoja, and Kogi State NASU Chairman and Ozuwaya Community Chairman. Some gunmen had, Tuesday, killed one Abdulganiyu Aduki, injured his five-year-old daughter and his wife at Nagazi in Adavi council. The incident took place at Inori Street of Nagazi community area, at about 7:30p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the State Police Public Relations Officer, William Ayah, who confirmed the incidents, said the Police will get the killers of the late labour leader, adding “the Command is working assiduously to unravel the occurrence. “We have some leads which we are working on, and we are optimistic of a breakthrough.” The murder of the NASU Chairman had made the organised labour suspend its discussion with government on the ongoing strike. State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Onuh Edoka, and his Trade Union Congress, TUC, counterpart, Ranti Ojo, said in a statement yesterday in Lokoja, that they suspended the negotiation with government to enable them mourn their slain colleague.
